5 Reasons Your Social Media Team Isn’t Driving Business Results

(And Why It’s Not Their Fault)

Let’s just say it out loud: if your social media team isn’t driving business results, it’s probably not because they’re lazy, junior, or out of ideas.

It’s because they’ve been set up to fail.

I’ve worked inside brands, at agencies and alongside social teams as a consultant, brought in when the wheels are already wobbling. In all those situations, I have seen the same patterns over and over again. Great people stuck in broken systems, expected to deliver strategic impact while operating with zero power, context, or clarity.

So if you’re a digital leader (or the social team), wondering why you can’t seem to “move the needle”… here are 5 things to consider

1. The social media team isn’t invited to strategy meetings—

…but they’re expected to deliver strategic output.

You want content that supports big-picture business goals?

The people making that content need a seat at the table when those goals are set. Strategy doesn’t trickle down well—especially when it’s shared via a forwarded slide deck or a vague Slack message.

2. The social media team's KPIs are disconnected from actual business priorities

Maybe the team’s measured on engagement, but leadership cares about conversion. Or, maybe the CMO wants thought leadership, but the content calendar is built around promos.

If the success metrics don’t match the business goals (or at least a path supporting them), no one’s going to feel like the work is working.

3. More time is spent chasing approvals than anything else

If the team spends hours (or days) chasing, or more likely, waiting for feedback, reworking copy, and trying to navigate unclear decision-makers, the content is already outdated by the time it goes live.

It’s not a productivity issue—it’s a workflow issue.

And it’s costing you speed, quality, and morale.

4. Brand edits, executive rewrites, and fire drills are killing momentum

Let’s be real — every time a VP swoops in with “just one change” or a last-minute “can we post this today?" — the strategy is being derailed.

Your team needs creative freedom, consistency, and a buffer from the chaos. Otherwise, you get safe, slow, forgettable content… and a burned-out team behind it.

5. Success was never clearly defined.

Is the goal reach? Reputation? Revenue?

Too often, “make it good” becomes the default brief, if there's a brief at all. 😳 And no one’s on the same page about what success even means.

When there’s no North Star, it’s easy to feel like everything’s falling short… even if it’s not.

Okay... So what?

If any (or all) of these sound familiar, you’re not alone. These aren’t signs of a weak team—they’re signs of a system that needs reworking.

Great social teams can absolutely drive business results. But only if they’re given the clarity, structure, and strategic access to actually do it.

Whether you’re leading a team that’s stuck in the weeds, or you are the team trying to break out of the chaos—I help bridge the gap between content and impact.
